O'Neil was in high school when she took part in 2005 to be a part of the third Canadian Idol season. The singer made it through to the top tier of contestants after the judges praised her voice. O'Neil received high praise from the jury. She was however a complete loser in the Top 10 Week and Top 9 Week of the Finals. The judges were shocked, and they advised to the audience to choose Melissa as the contestant with the most impressive ability to sing. O'Neil has been consistently giving stellar performances since then, never finished lower than the top three. O'Neil, Rex Goudie and Werner delivered two spectacular performance in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that the headlines would state that O'Neil was able to defeat Goudie and become the third Canadian Idol. She was the first female, and youngest winner in the time of the show. O'Neil was promptly congratulated by Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
